Using NABERS to Create Professional Development Goals

Sometimes PD feels irrelevant to our work, beyond or below our current knowledge and skill level, and sometimes downright soul–sucking. But it doesn’t have to be that way! If we take time to identify the professional learning we’re really needing and craving, we can then identify the best experiences for us individually or as teaching teams.
With that in mind, we’re offering an online workshop series this fall–Thursdays in October and November–to support YOUR professional growth related to nature-based education. The first workshop will focus on how to use the NAture-Based Education Rating Scale (NABERS) to identify the “natureness” of your PreK and K-3 program. Subsequent sessions will dig deeper into the different areas of quality.
Join us for Using NABERS to Create Professional Development Goals—the first session in the series—to learn how to use the NAture-Based Education Rating Scale (NABERS) to identify the “natureness” of your PreK and K-3 program and then use those results to establish professional development (PD) goals. We’ll discuss how to use NABERS individually, as classroom teaching teams, or as a school-wide team to review practices related to:
Program goals and curriculum practices
Staffing
Environment
Community partnerships
Family engagement
NABERS is for teachers, administrators, curriculum coaches, and quality rating improvement assessors who want to determine what level of nature is currently being implemented in a classroom. Those results can then be used to identify opportunities to shift the teaching to be even more nature-based and–more specifically–to develop individual and group professional development goals.
The workshop will address how to use the tool for ongoing program assessment and then how to create professional development plans based on that assessment. We’ll address questions such as “What do we do after we complete the assessment?”; “How do I know which areas are priorities for PD goals?”; and “How do I create an individualized professional development plan?”
This workshop will be held via Zoom. (Yes, we’ll send you the recording if you can’t attend live!) And whether you attend live or view the recording, we’ll send you a certificate for 2 hours of attendance.*
Though not required, we strongly recommend participants have a copy of the book Evaluating Natureness: Measuring the Quality of Nature-based Classrooms in Pre-K Through 3rd Grade. The NABERS tools for both PreK and K-3 are found inside this book. Purchase of the webinar + Evaluating Natureness book includes free shipping.
